Andy Cruz Confident he Will Soon Rule the Lightweight Division

In the aftermath of a loaded boxing weekend, unbeaten Cuban Andy Cruz (2-0, 1 KO) is one of the most talked about fighters among boxing observers. The highly-touted fighter from Cuba believes he’s on the path to greatness and will conquer the lightweight division.

Fighting on the undercard of the WBC junior welterweight title clash between Regis Prograis and Devin Haney, Cruz scored a second-round knockout over Jovanni “Impacto” Straffon. It was a sensational performance from Cruz, whose efforts were so stellar that he was trending on social media worldwide. Following his victory, Cruz put all comers at 135 on notice.

“I want to show that I’m coming here and I’m ready for these big challenges . . . I want to show that it’s not just a case of me having a good amateur career. It’s also the case that I’m gonna have a great professional career. I’m going to become a legend, and I’m going to win all of the belts.”

NOT WASTING ANY TIME

Cruz signed a deal with Matchroom Promotions in May 2023. The promotional giant has plans to move him along rapidly. With a lengthy and decorated background that includes a Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the 28-year-old is not your ordinary up-and-comer.

The win over Straffon earned Cruz the regional IBF International title. Look for the Cuban to become ranked in the IBF world rankings by early 2024. Chairman of Matchroom, Eddie Hearn, is looking to have Cruz back into the ring in February 2024 against a world-ranked, Top 15 opponent.

ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR SUCCESS

In boxing, talent matters, and skills pay the bill. Cruz is very blessed in both departments. The fundamentals and technique are as solid as they come. His offensive attack is very diverse, with the ability to be equally effective on the outside or in close quarters.

Defensively, he’s one of these fighters with the unique ability to anticipate and avoid incoming fire. On top of all that, he has the poise of a ten-year professional. As a result of those attributes, it’s understandable why Matchroom has extreme confidence in him. In truth, there’s no reason to put any limits on him.

The lightweight division is in a state of transformation following Devin Haney’s decision to vacate the unified belts in November 2023. Cruz certainly fits in the landscape of fighters at 135 who can make plenty of noise and do damage. He’s confident that lightweight will be his for the taking.
