David Light is on the rise!

Undefeated New Zealand cruiserweight David Light continues winning while hoping to crack into the ranking system and challenge some of the top contenders. The 27-year old fighter faced former title contender Mark Flanagan on May 18. It was a very good step up fight that saw the young prospect victorious with a ten-round unanimous decision.

Light was facing arguably the most experienced boxer and hardest puncher of his career. However, this didn’t seem to bother him at all. He used his superior boxing skills to gain total control of the fight from the very beginning, improving his record to 13-0, 8 KOs.

As the holder of the WBO Oriental title, he is now forced to look at some of the second tier contenders to gain attention on the world stage.

Team Light, in the past due to a lack of opponents, once considered a fight with fellow undefeated countryman #7 rated WBO heavyweight boxer Junior Fa. However, within the cruiserweight division, there are plenty of good match-ups available to help boost his position.

First, there is veteran contender and southpaw Thabiso Mchunu. In 2013, he defeated heavyweight Eddie Chambers before losing his first world title opportunity to then WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk in 2016. Then there is tough, cagey veteran Mateusz Masternak. He has been in the ring with the likes of former world champions Yunier Dorticos, Tony Bellew and Jean Marc Mormeck.

Either of those fights would be a very good test and could help break him into the world stage of boxing.
