Can Ray Muratalla Build his Name on the Back of Andy Cruz?
On January 24, Raymond “Danger” Muratalla will make a high-stakes defense of the IBF lightweight title against Andy Cruz. For the champion, the bout represents an opportunity not only to expose the Cruz’s perceived shortcomings but also to legitimize himself in the eyes of the boxing public.
The IBF named Muratalla (23-0, 17 KOs) champion status after former titleholder Vasyl Lomachenko officially retired in June 2025. Because he never won the belt inside the ring, a cloud of skepticism continues to follow the California native. Against Cruz, Muratalla is intent on silencing those doubts once and for all.
Standing across from him is one of the division’s most polished technicians. Cruz (6-0, 3 KOs), a decorated amateur standout, is widely regarded as one of the slickest and most skilled craftsmen in the division. Due to his age and extensive amateur résumé, the Cuban has rapidly scaled the professional ranks.
THE CHAMPION BELIEVES HE CAN STOP CRUZ
Muratalla believes that the accelerated path will ultimately work against the challenger.
In pre-fight interviews, the defending champion has expressed confidence that Cruz’s limited professional experience will be his undoing. Muratalla feels he holds a decisive edge in power, and he believes his relentless pressure and physicality will overwhelm Cruz and lead to a stoppage on fight night.
Beyond this immediate challenge, Muratalla views the bout as the first step in a much larger mission to establish himself as the face of the lightweight division. Whether that vision becomes a reality will be determined against what promises to be his toughest title defense to date.
