Jai Opetaia Could Come to Regret Signing with Zuffa Boxing

Sometimes, signing with a new promoter does more harm than good. That may ultimately be the case for IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia, whose recent decision to sign with Zuffa Boxing may complicate his career, long-term.

Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) announced via social media that he has parted ways with Matchroom Boxing and signed a deal with Zuffa Boxing. On the surface, the move feels like a head-scratcher, and for several reasons.

The Australian has consistently spoken about facing the biggest names in the cruiserweight division. Moreover, his ultimate goal of becoming undisputed has just gotten harder. That ambition now appears at odds with his promotional choice. Founded by UFC president Dana White, Zuffa Boxing has made it clear it does not intend to work with rival boxing promoters or recognize the four major sanctioning bodies.

A CONFUSING MOVE BY THE CHAMPION

That stance creates an obvious roadblock. Opetaia has openly called for a fight with the winner of the upcoming bout between unified champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez and light heavyweight champion David Benavidez. Yet, he has effectively distanced himself from the very ecosystem that would make such a fight possible.

Fan reaction has reflected that concern. More than a few supporters voiced disappointment across social media, and their frustration is understandable. How does Opetaia chase undisputed status while signing with a promoter that openly dismisses the belts required to achieve it?

For Zuffa, Opetaia is a high-profile acquisition and a valuable credibility boost as the company attempts to establish itself in boxing. For Opetaia, however, the decision risks projecting the image of a fighter prioritizing short-term financial security over legacy-defining opportunities.

Opetaia should be positioning himself for unifications and career-altering matchups. However, stepping outside the traditional boxing framework may leave him isolated. A shame it would be—talented, undefeated, and championed, but increasingly detached from the fights that matter most.
