How Much Longer Can Richardson Hitchins Reign At 140 Pounds?

Reigning IBF junior welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) is widely regarded as one of the very best at 140 pounds. However, weight issues could play a significant role in determining whether the 28-year-old will continue to reign for a prolonged period.

During a recent appearance on The Porter Way Podcast, Hitchins conceded that the trials of getting down to the 140-pound limit, and the subsequent IBF rehydration clause, affected his performance in an April 2024 hotly contested victory over Gustavo Lemos in a world-title eliminator.

TROUBLING SIGNS?

While Hitchins looked sharp in subsequent outings against Liam Paro to win the IBF strap and in an eighth-round stoppage of George Kambosos Jr. in June 2025, it is reasonable to question how long he can comfortably remain at junior welterweight. The Brooklyn, New York native has already stated he would be willing to move up to 147 pounds for a showdown with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney.

Next up for Hitchins is a February 21 title defense against Oscar Duarte in Las Vegas. Even if he successfully defends his belt, one thing appears clear: a move to welterweight would not only ease the physical strain of repeated weight cuts but could also open the door to fresh, high-profile matchups better suited to his technical skillset and ring IQ. Given his height and frame, Hitchins seems physically capable of handling the transition with relative ease.

For now, Hitchins continues to operate with the discipline of a fighter determined to maximize his championship window at 140 pounds. But if the struggles on the scale intensify—or if his performances begin to show even subtle decline—the conversation about moving up in weight will shift from speculation to inevitability.
