Gary Russell throws a shot at Gervonta Davis!
Prior to WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.’ Gary Russell Jr’s (31-1, 18 KO’s) prizefight with Tugstsogt “King Tug” Nyambayar (11-1, 9 KO’s) many thought he was in for a tough bout.
However, once in the ring, the DC native displayed the skill and blazing hand speed that he is infamous for. As a result, after twelve full rounds of action, Russell claimed a dominant unanimous decision win.
MORE SHOTS FIRED AT TANK
While there is no one in their right mind that can question Russell’s in-ring ability most folks point an accusatory finger at his anemic fight schedule. He is routinely harassed and teased about his consistent 1-bout a year fight schedule.
In his own defense, Russell vigorously reminds all who brings it up that he is willing to fight anyone. In fact, the WBC featherweight champion insists that it’s the evasiveness of his fellow champions that results in underwhelming fight schedule.
One boxer in particular that he wants to rumble with is former super featherweight champion and current WBA “regular” lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22 KO’s).
Following his win over King Tug, and after being questioned about his stingy fight schedule, Russell had some choice words for Tank Davis as provided by Fight Hype.
“[on what it will take to get Davis in the ring] For him to grow some nuts, for his team to grow some cajones and stop acting like a sucka.
“What type of stuff is that to say I don’t want to fight him because it don’t sell, you sound like a sucka!
“You sound like a sucka, you mean to tell me because I’m telling you I want to fight you, you picking and choosing who you want to fight? Come on man, I aint trying to hear that!
“Hell yeah, that fight would sell! We don’t even have to put no titles on the line, we can do a charity event and everybody will come to that fight.
“So what he is talking about don’t even make sense, you know the fight would sell, we could fight in DC, everybody and they mother and grandmother would come to that fight! So let’s make it happen!
“I’m not going to say that he is a great fighter. I do take my hat off to him because I watched him come up in the amateurs.
“I’m glad that he had the opportunity to provide a sense of financial stability for his family and friends and all, but he definitely don’t have the skillset that it takes to mess with me!
“That’s the reason that he is choosing as well as his team and Floyd and everybody else is choosing to him away from me.
“They handpicking who they want to fight, I don’t hand pick who I fight. I fight whoever say they want to fight me!”
UNLIKELY SHOWDOWN
While this would be a good fight it does not appear to be on the horizon anytime soon. Not only has Davis not shown much interest in fighting Russell, the current industry rumblings suggest that Tank is on the verge of announcing a fight with WBA super world super featherweight champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KO’s).
Santa Cruz yet another fighter Russell has been calling for a fight!
