Eimantas Stanionis Successfully Defends Title From Maestre
After being out of the ring for two years, WBA Regular welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (15-0, 9KO) picked up a solid win over challenger and amateur rival Gabriel Maestre (6-1-1, 5KO).
There was no feeling-out round in this fight as both fighters came out throwing leather. Maestre started finding a home for that lethal left hook and quick shots to the body. Stanionis was quick to return fire by testing the chin of his opponent with left hook right hand combinations. He kept the pressure on and was landing hard shots to the body.
In the middle rounds, the Venezuelan fired off left hooks and right hands to the body that momentarily halted the Lithuanian’s aggression. Yet, the WBA champion’s defense came alive as he avoided shots before firing off sharp counter shots. His used that power jab to perfection before ripping off different variations of the right hand.
Maestre did better in the closing rounds finding a home for the uppercuts. But Stanionis’ jab couldn’t miss. His counterpunching ability was on point also as he was landing that overhand right followed by brutal left hooks.
As the scorecards were tallied, they read 119-109, 118-110, and 117-111 in favor of Stanionis. Now that ring rust has been shaken off, it is time to start marching toward a fight with a big name in the division.
