Shakur Stevenson Seeking Unification with Joe Cordina in England!
A target was immediately placed on the back of Joe Cordina (15-0, 9KOs) after he brutally stopped Kenichi Ogawa (26-2-1-1, 18KOs) in two rounds to win the IBF 130-pound title. Unified champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (18-0, 9KOs) took to social media to give props to his fellow champion counterpart credit, but also followed that up with his willingness to go across the pond for a unification showdown.
Stevenson has recently stated his intention to become undisputed at 130. After his one-sided unanimous decision victory in his unification bout against two-division champion Oscar Valdez (30-1, 23KOs) on April 30, he’s looking for more. He’s considered the best fighter at junior lightweight and he’s halfway towards his goal.
Cordina should be more inclined to Stevenson’s proposal given his willingness to come to his backyard. After his brutal knockout victory over Ogawa, he has to feel he’s capable of beating anyone at 130, including Stevenson.
It’ll be interesting to see if Cordina responds to Stevenson. Furthermore, would he fight him so quickly after winning his first world title? Hearn did mention Stevenson as a possible opponent in the post-fight interview. However, its not likely that fight will happen in 2022. Hearn is sure to to continue to build Cordina up as a major star in England before entertaining that bout. Hopefully, the two will fight in the near future.
