Lopez Says a Nine-Figure Contract Deal Can Convince Him to Stave Off Retirement
On June 10, Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13KO) delivered an outstanding performance to defeat WBO junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor. The two-divisional champion put to bed any questions concerning his mental state, but threw everyone a curveball immediately following the victory with talks of retirement. However, newly crowned champion is willing to keep fighting, if offered a better deal.

SHOW ME THE MONEY
The root of the problem is money, as Lopez believes that he is not being fairly compensated. The Takeover went into detail as to what could change his mind in an interview on The Porter Way Podcast.
“I think the only way you get Teofimo back is a nine-figure contract deal. I’ve made ESPN over $100 million, and I’m still getting paid a million dollars a fight while all these other fighters that have not even done a quarter of what I’ve done and I’ve accomplished in the sport, they’re getting 8, 10, 12, and 15 million dollars.”
It is not the first time The Takeover has expressed unhappiness over not being paid his worth. In 2021, his fight with then-mandatory challenger George Kambosos went to a purse bid, due to an inability to reach a financial agreement with Top Rank.
As of this writing, Top Rank has yet to issue a response concerning this matter. Lopez seems to be serious about walking away unless he receives more money.
