Is Wilder in for a Successful Return or a Stunning Upset to Helenius?

On October 15, former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-2-1, 41KO) will step into the ring against Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius (31-3, 20KO). The former champion is looking to bounce back from two devastating stoppages by WBC champion Tyson Fury. Helenius is coming off two impressive victories over respected contender Adam Kownacki; the last of which he ironically won on the undercard of the Fury v Wilder trilogy.

Robert Helenius ranks #2 and #5, respectively, by the WBA and WBC. He was the main sparring partner in helping Wilder prepare for the trilogy against Fury. This will provide The Nordic Nightmare some familiarity with his foe going into the fight.

HELENIUS NEEDS TO FIGHT SMART

In order for Helenius to score the victory, the jab is going to be the key. Wilder has the longer reach, but isn’t known for using the jab, which works in favor of Helenius. He can’t go backward with his chin in the air, and he needs to stay off the ropes. Lastly, he has to attack the former champion to test his mental state while being careful of the right hand.

WILDER HAS TO LAND THE RIGHT HAND

The WBC #1 contender has the best equalizer in the sport in that right hand. Wilder must command respect early by pumping the jab often to set up his moneymaker. Conditioning will be a factor, as he can not get tired early like he did in the trilogy bout. Lastly, Wilder will need to be patient and try not to force the knockout in order to avoid making a crucial mistake.

PREDICTION

Although fans may question the mental state of Wilder, his two defeats came at the hands of the best heavyweight in the sport. Furthermore, Helenius does not possess the same skillset as Fury. With that being said, Wilder is the betting favorite and should win the fight by knockout.

The fight can be seen live on FOX Pay-Per-View at the Barclay Center in New York.
