Teofimo Lopez Must Bring his A-Game Against Shakur Stevenson

January 31 marks one of the most anticipated fights of the early boxing calendar, as Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez defends his WBO junior welterweight title against WBC lightweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson at Madison Square Garden. Expect Lopez to be fully locked in once the opening bell rings.

Blessed with speed and power, Lopez’s physical gifts and explosiveness are undeniable. The issue has never been talent, but consistency. For every performance where he looks elite, there has been another in which he appears listless and ordinary. That said, Lopez tends to rise when he feels genuinely threatened.

DELIVERS WHEN IT TRULY COUNTS

This was evident in October 2020 when Lopez faced Vasyl Lomachenko – a fighter widely viewed as too experienced and too skilled for him at the time. Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) responded with the performance of his career, earning a unanimous decision victory. He elevated his game again in June 2023, delivering a dominant showing to dethrone then undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor. Most recently, Lopez looked sharp and focused in June 2025, cruising past mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr.

He will need that same level of sharpness against Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs). The undefeated champion’s boxing acumen and ring IQ are elite. If Lopez is even slightly off, he won’t just lose — he risks being thoroughly embarrassed.

Ultimately, Lopez has proven one thing throughout his career: he fights to the level of his competition. Against Shakur Stevenson, that reality should bring out the very best version of “The Takeover.”
