Will Abass Baraou Make or Break Xander Zayas at 154 Pounds?

Reigning WBO junior middleweight champion Xander Zayas is days away from the most meaningful test of his young career as he faces WBA title-holder Abass Baraou on January 31 in his homeland of Puerto Rico. The bout represents more than an opportunity to unify titles — it’s Zayas’ chance to prove he is a legitimate force in the 154-pound division.

Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) captured the vacant WBO belt in July 2025. However, his title-winning effort did little to silence skeptics. He defeated Jorge Garcia Duran, a capable but far-from-elite opponent, in what many observers viewed as yet another carefully selected matchup. Among hardcore fans, the criticism has been consistent: Zayas has been protected, feasting on soft competition, and his championship status has been labeled by some as little more than boxing’s version of fool’s gold. That’s why Baraou (17-1, 9 KOs) matters.

HIS MOMENT TO SHINE

Unlike Zayas’ previous opponents, Baraou has the tools and experience to push him out of his comfort zone. He should force Zayas to extend himself in ways he hasn’t yet been required to do as a professional. If Zayas can secure a convincing victory, it would go a long way toward legitimizing his standing in the division.

More importantly, it would signal that Zayas belongs among the junior middleweight elite. He could stand among fighters such as Sebastian Fundora, Bakhram Murtazaliev, Vergil Ortiz Jr., and Jaron “Boots” Ennis. Until now, that status has been more assumed than earned. On January 31, Zayas finally has the proving ground to change that narrative.
