Alfredo Santiago Wins Dominant Decision Over Angel Fierro
Fighting for the first time in two years, former world title challenger Alfredo Santiago (14-2, 6 KOs) came away with a unanimous decision (99-91, 98-92, 98-92) victory over Angel “Tashiro” Fierro (22-2-2, 17 KOs) at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico.
Using his height, reach, and advantage in footwork to full effect, Santiago got off to an excellent start and never let off the gas. Switching back and forth from southpaw to orthodox, he peppered Tashiro with head and body combinations. At the halfway mark, Santiago was full of confidence and even started to taunt and toy with his adversary.
Fierro attempted to rally in the late rounds. But Santiago would not be denied. Fighting in his adopted home country of Puerto Rico, he responded by gritting his teeth and tagging Fierro with hard right hands and left hooks. By the end of the fight, the crowd was on their feet, roaring in approval.
For Santiago, this has to rank as the biggest win of his career. Fierro came into the contest ranked third by the WBO at lightweight. Now it’s back to the drawing board.
