Erik Bazinyan Could Challenge David Morrell For His WBA Regular Title Next
WBA’s number-two rated super middleweight Erik Bazinyan (30-0, 21KO) could be on the verge of fighting WBA Regular champion David Morrell (9-0, 8KO).
On June 1, Bazinyan escaped a huge scare against Mexican Jose de Jesus Macias. He was winning the fight easily in cruise control during the early portion of the contest. Then he got hurt in the seventh round and fought in defense mode until the final bell.
In the end, he walked away with a unanimous decision victory, keeping his name in the hunt for a world championship. Bazinyan is ranked in the number-two slot by the WBC and WBO, putting him on the path to challenge for a title.
MORRELL VERSUS BAZINYAN IS A POSSIBILITY
Undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is busy deciding either to fight two-time WBC champion David Benavidez or a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. Two-divisional champion Demetrius Andrade is ranked in the WBA number-one spot. However, he has locked in on trying to get a fight against WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. Provided Team Bazinyan is not willing to wait around, they could decide to challenge the WBA Regular champion.
Morrell is no longer a secret in the minds of boxing fans. He has emerged as a serious threat to anyone in the division. In his last fight, the Cuban sensation ran over Yamaguchi Falcao in the first round for his seventh consecutive knockout. Furthermore, he wasted no time in calling out fellow stablemate Benavidez.
As of the writing of this article, the WBA has not ordered any movement in the division. But fans shouldn’t be surprised if the two teams decide to hash out a contract themselves to make the fight.
