Blair Cobbs Promises Exciting Bout with Adrien Broner
It is no secret that welterweight boxer Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KO’s) has been dissatisfied with his activity level. He has not fought in about nineteen months, or since his August 6, 2022 scrap with Maurice Hooker. Unsurprisingly, Cobbs has made it public knowledge that he has split with his former promoters at Golden Boy Promotion and joined ranks with Don King Promotions. Going a step further, The Flair announced that his first fight with the new outfit will be against four-division champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (35-4-1, 24 KO’s).
Cobbs said as much from his own mouth in a recent interview with Mill City Boxing.
“The news is this, Blair The Flair will be getting in the ring with another exciting fight and another exciting fighter. We have Adrien Broner versus Blair The Flair; it’s going to be a big attraction – the best attraction that boxing could possibly offer!”
CLOSED DOOR, BUT WINDOW AJAR
In all honesty, this is not a bad match for either man. Like Cobbs, Broner has been extremely inactive, having only fought four matches in the past six years. In his last duel, versus Bill Hutchinson on June 9, 2023, Broner won but performed in far-from-spectacular fashion. It was beyond evident that the Cincinnati wild man was quite a ways away from his best fighting shape and would benefit from more endurance training.
Had the Cobbs prizefight been contracted more in his prime, there is little doubt that Broner would be the overwhelming favorite in this contest. Perhaps he still will be. Now however, this squabble will be much more of a tossup. And if Broner, 34, doesn’t vastly improve his conditioning, the voluminous puncher Cobbs, 35, could be a major hurdle blocking his continued professional advancement.
PUT SOME RESPECT ON IT!
Until now, for the most part, the very eccentric and dramatic Cobbs has been largely dismissed by the more notable names in the divisions. Fighters the likes of Jaron “Boots” Ennis, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. have all supplied condescending and disparaging remarks about The Flair to various media members.
Now however, if he is able to claim the scalp of Broner and his household name, there is a solid chance Cobbs could begin to change his luck. It’s far from a guarantee, but a win over The Problem would be a very solid launching point to begin from. If Cobbs were to lose however, that could be the first official death knell of his career. And at 35 years of age, Blair Cobbs doesn’t have any time to waste!
