Brandon Figueroa Stops Jessie Magdaleno In 2024 Debut
In a featherweight showdown, one-time unified champion super bantamweight champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa (25-1-1, 19KO) stopped one-time WBO bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno (29-3, 18KO).
Magdaleno did a good job, early in the fight, taking advantage of The Hearbreaker’s inability to move the head. In addition, he was scoring with those uppercuts and hooks whenever they fought in a phonebooth.
Figueroa showed signs of ring rust after being out over a year. His timing and ability to fight on inside was off. Despite having some success, the Texan was getting beat to the punch repeatedly.
In the middle rounds, Figueroa’s pressure started to change the momentum of the fight. He took advantage of Magdaleno being on the ropes by ripping off combination shots to the body and head.
The fighter from Nevada wasn’t completely helpless as he landed some solid uppercuts and shots to Figueroa’s body while on the ropes.
In round nine, Figueroa to pick up the attack as Magdaleno’s activity had slowed down. With his opponent against the ropes, The Heartbreaker landed the perfect left hook to the liver that took the fight out of the former bantamweight champion.
Although it took some doing, Figueroa got the stoppage and should look to get right back in the ring as soon as possible. In addition, he needs to push for the fight against WBC champion Rey Vargas next.
