Its Too Soon for Bruce Carrington vs Naoya Inoue

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington has not been shy about expressing his desire to fight reigning undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya “Monster” Inoue. While the ambition is understandable, recent evidence suggests that Carrington is not yet ready for that level of challenge.

Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) is coming off a ninth-round stoppage victory over Carlos Castro to capture the vacant WBC title on January 31 in New York City. While Shu Shu ultimately won the fight in spectacular fashion, the bout was far from flawless. Castro gave Carrington problems throughout the contest and even managed to wobble the newly-crowned champion.

HOLES IN HIS GAME

Styles make fights, but any serious boxing fan must acknowledge that Inoue is operating on a completely different level than Castro. Inoue (32-0, 27 KOs) is blessed with elite physical attributes—explosive speed, concussive power, and supreme athleticism. What truly separates Inoue from the pack, however, is his experience and his often-underrated boxing IQ.

Carrington is an offensive machine and is one of the hardest punchers at 126 pounds. Still, the Castro fight exposed defensive vulnerabilities. Carrington can be hit, and his offense can be slowed when opponents establish a strong jab and use consistent lateral movement. Those are qualities Inoue possesses in abundance—and executes at an elite level.

With Carrington and Inoue currently competing in different weight classes, a matchup between the two is unlikely in the immediate future. That may be a blessing in disguise for Carrington. Before even entertaining the idea of facing one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world, Shu Shu needs more time to refine his defense, tighten his fundamentals, and gain experience against top-tier opposition at featherweight.

The talent is undeniable and the confidence is admirable. But against a fighter like Naoya Inoue, potential alone isn’t enough. Right now, Carrington still has work to do.
