Is Christian Medina vs Jesse Rodriguez Next?

WBO bantamweight champion Christian Medina is beginning to establish himself as a world champion of serious substance. His future could include a showdown with one of boxing’s elite craftsmen – reigning junior bantamweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez.

Medina (27–4, 19 KOs) is coming off a successful defense of his WBO title, earning a unanimous decision victory (120–108, 115–113, 116–112) over former IBF junior flyweight champion Adrien Curiel at the Domo Alcalde in Guadalajara, Mexico. The difference in size was evident, as Medina proved to be the bigger and stronger fighter. He used that advantage—along with consistent pressure and sustained body work—to control the action from the opening bell.

A LOGICAL OPTION FOR BOTH FIGHTERS

Following the win, there are growing signals that a bout with Rodriguez (23–0, 16 KOs) could take place later this year. It’s a matchup that makes perfect sense and one that is already on the minds of hardcore boxing fans across social media.

While Rodriguez’s ultimate goal is to face the winner of the upcoming clash between Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani, the junior bantamweight titleholder has also expressed interest in capturing a world title at 118 pounds.

From a stylistic standpoint, Medina vs. Rodriguez presents an intriguing contrast. How would Medina handle Bam’s elite boxing skills and footwork? Conversely, how would Bam deal with Medina’s relentless pressure, physical strength, and punching power?

A victory for Medina would cement his status as a true power player in boxing’s lower-weight divisions. For Rodriguez, defeating Medina would make him a three-division world champion.

Both Medina and Rodriguez fight under the Matchroom Boxing promotional banner, which could ease negotiations. If the bout becomes reality, it could take place either in the southwestern United States—where Rodriguez enjoys strong support—or in Medina’s home country of Mexico.
