An Injury Forces Brian Castano to Delay Charlo Undisputed Sequel
The highly anticipated March 19 sequel between unified junior middleweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) and WBO champion Brian “El Boxi” Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs) has been temporarily postponed. This comes after Castano suffered a small biceps tear in his right shoulder while sparring.
This is unfortunate because the two men were hoping to determine who was the better fighter once and for all and crown a new undisputed junior middleweight champion. Their July 2021 fight was a thriller that saw both men dominate portions of the fight that were closely contested. It would ultimately end in a draw.
ANOTHER OBSTACLE?
One problem may arise. The injury is reportedly minor and is expected to keep Castano out for 3–4 weeks. In that time, WBO mandatory Tim “The Soul Taker” Tsyzu (20-0, 15 KOs), who’s in line for a shot at Castano, will certainly push to have his shot at the champ instead of allowing for the fight to be rescheduled.
Will the WBO stand pat and allow their champion, Castano, to recover and fight in a much more significant fight, or will they mandate him to face Tsyzu next? Let’s hope it’s not the latter. Especially considering this postponement isn’t a long one. A month’s delay should not be a problem.
However, it all comes down to what the WBO decides to do. Let’s hope they do the right thing and allow Castano to fight Charlo in a rematch that needs to happen for both men and boxing.
3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
