Terence Crawford Starts Pressure Campaign to Land Canelo Fight
Two-divisional undisputed champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31KO) remains relentless in his pursuit of a bout against undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39KO). In his latest attempt, Crawford took to social media to share an old interview of Canelo expressing openness to a fight against Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (28-0, 22KO).
The desire for a Crawford vs Canelo showdown sparked after Bud secured the undisputed welterweight crown by defeating Spence. Crawford quickly shifted his focus to a potential clash with Canelo at 160 pounds, igniting debates among boxing fans about his chances against the Mexican superstar.
Canelo dismissed the idea, suggesting that fans wouldn’t give him credit for a victory, citing Crawford’s smaller size. He reiterated his stance in a post-fight interview following his comfortable victory over Jermell Charlo on September 30.
However, Bud remains undeterred and shared an interview by Fight Hub TV where Canelo expressed willingness to fight Spence at 160 pounds.
“Yeah, that’s something we can still do. So yeah, we can still go down to 160.”
While it may seem like a double standard on Canelo’s part, a closer look at the situation reveals otherwise. The interview in question occurred in 2020, and Canelo had changed his mind about fighting Spence long before Crawford’s victory over him on July 29.
In 2022, Canelo revealed that he had turned down an offer to fight Spence at a catchweight of 164 pounds. Consequently, Canelo isn’t holding contradictory positions. Although, Crawford has recently expressed a willingness to move up to the super middleweight division.
The boxing world continues to speculate about a potential showdown between these two top pound for pound fighters. Despite Canelo’s initial reluctance, fans have learned that with the right financial incentives, any dream match can become a reality.
