Danny Garcia Was Mentally Checked Out Of Boxing
On September 14, two-division champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (37-3, 21 KO’s) will return to the boxing ring against WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. In this duel, Garcia will aim to achieve his life long goal of becoming a three-division champion. Yet in a recent interview with Fight Hype, Garcia revealed that prior to being offered the fight, he had one foot out of the sport.
“To be honest, I really just forgot about it. I really wasn’t even thinking about fighting! I just had two more kids, I had my daughter Palace, she just turned two, I just had a son two months ago; I wasn’t even thinking about boxing. I started my boxing promotion, so I did promotional cards and I was just keeping my head in other things, just staying busy, watching these young guys train, always keeping my head in the game, watching boxing.”
“But to be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about boxing until I got the call and then I was like, ‘let’s do it’. Six weeks ago, I wasn’t even thinking about boxing! And then they called and said, ‘do you want to fight on the Canelo undercard versus Berlanga?’ I said, ‘it makes sense – Berlanga is Puerto Rican, I am Puerto Rican’. I’m a big draw, I can make history winning the middleweight title, so how could I say no?”
GAS IN THE TANK?
For many, this will beg the question: ‘how physically and mentally prepared will Garcia be for this match?’ Especially since it will be his first duel in two years and only his second in the past four. Then there is the added hurdle of him also moving up in weight to make the fight a reality. Realistically, these are several serious obstacles to merely brush aside.
Provided that Swift comes out on top, there is no doubt that this will make for one remarkable victory. If there was ever a time, this is when Garcia will need his famed no-look left hook to show up in a major way! Yet, perhaps this time away has helped preserve him, and his growing family just may be the perfect carrot on a stick to coerce his best performance yet. Ultimately we will just have to wait and see what Swift can produce come fight night.
