Tank Davis Focused on the Future!

On December 28, Gervonta “Tank” Davis (22-0, 21 KO’s) will try his hand in the new and lucrative Atlanta, Georgia market.

There, in the State Farm Arena, Tank will face veteran Yuriorkis “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” Gamboa (30-2, 18 KO’s) on SHOWTIME. To add further intrigue to the prizefight, the vacant WBA world lightweight title will be hanging in the balance.

READY FOR WAR

Truth be known, most in the boxing world feel as though Tank will eat up Gamboa like a Pac-Man pellet slathered in gravy. At 38 years of age, with twelve years in the game, El Ciclon’s best day are likely behind him.

However, perhaps that is exactly what makes him dangerous. The proud Cuban is well aware that is probably his last opportunity at becoming a world champion.

It’s this do-or-die version of Gamboa that Tank is readying himself for. Davis is not putting much stock in the theory that a win over Gamboa is a foregone conclusion. The Baltimore native is cognizant that El Ciclon has all the tools and motivation to derail all the great plans that the Money Team has for him.

“Facing Gamboa will definitely bring out some things that the sport hasn’t seen yet as far as my skills, you know? Because Gamboa not coming in as a slouch.

“He definitely coming to fight and my mindset is on that he is coming to fight. I’m giving it my all December 28 and hopefully he will give it his all and the fans win that night.”

DOWN THE LINE

While Tank is respectful of his next competitor, he is still firm in his belief that he will come out victorious. Having this frame of mind, Davis is open to playing mythical matchmaker.

One fighter in particular that he sees combating in the future is newly crowned IBF world lightweight champion Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, 12 KO’s).

Lopez claimed an impressive one-round annihilation of the former IBF champion Richard “RC” Commey (29-3, 26 KO’s) on December 14. The stunning stoppage was enough to put pressure on fellow WBA and WBO world lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s) to say that he would like to face El Brooklyn.

Top Rank promotes for both Lopez and Lomachenko. At the moment, it appears as if they are on a crash course for a first or second quarter 2020 clash.

When providing an interview with SecondsOut, Tank Davis made it plain and clear that he would enjoy a showdown of his own with Teofimo Lopez.

“He’s [Lopez] a good fighter. I believe that he got skills and things like that. He put on a great performance in his last fight.

“Hopefully we’ll get him in the future, in the near future so we make all the big fights happen.”
