Is De La Hoya Seeking Inhouse an Garcia v Lopez Bout?
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya’s pursuit of WBO junior welterweight champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez may result in a “King” Ryan Garcia showdown.
When The Takeover revealed on social media that he may be a free agent, De La Hoya sprung into action. The Golden Boy CEO quickly threw out a lifeline to the Brooklyn native. In addition, he applauded Lopez for turning down a fight with The Dream, whom he has criticized repeatedly following Haney’s win over Jose Ramirez.
The reality is De La Hoya has taken some heavy hits with Garcia and Jaime Munguia sidelined. Golden Boy needs to make a move, fast. Lopez is a name that boxing fans recognize and his last performance may have bought him some goodwill.
With so much uncertainty surrounding Garcia fans shouldn’t be surprised he is looking to bring in some new blood. In this author’s opinion, this could spell trouble for the Californian as De La Hoya could be looking to set up a big money fight in Lopez vs Garcia.
Honestly, Lopez’s fanbase isn’t that big either. He has complained about not fighting in bigger arenas. The Takeover fought on the undercard of Garcia’s loss to Rolando Romero on May 2. It will be interesting to see what happens over these next few months.
