Lawrence Okolie Has Yet To Prove He’s An Elite Heavyweight
Lawrence Okolie barely broke a sweat en route to a unanimous decision victory over Kevin Lerena. Despite the win, skepticism lingers about whether Okolie has what it takes to mix it up with the elite of the heavyweight division.
Fighting on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Daniel Dubois II event in London, England, Okolie (22-1, 16 KOs) relied on his jab, footwork, and occasional combinations to rack up points. Lerena (31-3, 15 KOs) offered little in return, as Okolie boxed circles around him. The bout lacked intensity and urgency, at times resembling a glorified sparring session rather than a high-stakes heavyweight contest.
With the victory, Okolie retains his top ranking with the WBC. However, serious doubts remain about him and his place among the division’s best. Since moving up to heavyweight in 2025, the 32-year-old has yet to face a top-tier opponent in their prime. While the division isn’t as deep as in years past, most boxing analysts agree that Okolie remains a tier below the likes of Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, and Joseph Parker.
The issue with Okolie is clear: he lacks the elite boxing IQ and fluidity of fighters like Usyk or Fury, and doesn’t possess the physical strength or explosiveness of Parker or Dubois. That leaves him in an awkward spot — a solid fighter, but one who may fall short against the very best the division has to offer.
