Are Devin Haney & Conor Benn Stirring Up a Comeback Fight?

Now that two-division champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) has made public his intentions to return to activity, the burning question is: “against who?” In a recent interview with Andre Ward, The Dream shut down any notion that it may be WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez. Yet, a fresh social media skirmish between Haney and welterweight contender Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (23-0, 14 KO’s) makes room for new possibilities.

LET’S SETTLE THIS

The two have traded words and threatened to battle one another before. Bill Haney, Devins’ father and chief second, even pulled up on a Conn Benn post-fight presser just to promote and antagonize. So, might Benn get the call?

Until we see him again in the ring though, no one knows what grade of fighter The Dream is this side of the Ryan Garcia razing. Haney could be rebuilt, smarter and sharper than ever; or he could be gun shy, a little less durable and over cautious. Either is just as likely.

And if we know anything at all about The Destroyer, he is more established at 147 and has a respectable caliber of punch. Haney may be forced to navigate any number of troubles contending with that leap in weight alone. Mixing potential residual effects and Benn’s gloved knuckles into the equation could quickly spell disaster.

GENUINE ARTICLE OR FOOL’S GOLD?

Taking size and strength off the table though, what accolades does Benn really have to fall on? He’s never fought for a title, performed in the main event of a big time show or claimed a marquee scalp on his resume. On top of this, his name is still very soiled with the scandal of his 2022 failed drug test. Despite getting his suspension overturned, many still look at The Destroyer with a suspicious eye.

Would Haney be given earnest credit for fairly quickly stepping up in weight and toppling the heavy-handed, brash and undefeated international figure? Could Haney bounce back from back-to-back losses, potentially? Regardless of the outcome, this still would make for one fun prizefight!
