Devin Haney and Rolando Romero go hard on social media
The rivalry between WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15ko) and WBA interim titlist Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12ko) goes back to the days in the Mayweather boxing gym. Their social media attacks on each other have been lengthy and personal. However, their recent social media outburst has crossed a serious line.
Romero has been dogging the WBC champion for what seems like forever, and he would go after his arch-rival with extreme prejudice. Even recently, this month alone, the WBA interim titlist reposted a photoshopped picture of Haney as a female, referring to himself as Daddy Rolly.
Boxing fans were happy when trainer/father Bill Haney dropped the news that the two arch-rivals can finally settle things in the ring.
“All I have to say about that is you’ve said a lot of things, Mr. Romero. You’ve said a lot of things, now is your opportunity to face Devin Haney and get a shot at this world title.”
This should have been good news. Instead, it has turned into another drama show with a plot twist not even Hollywood could have made up.
ROMERO HAD A CHANGE OF HEART
Suddenly, Romero no longer wants to fight Haney but wants to fight WBA ‘regular’ champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Yes, the same page right out of Ryan Garcia’s playbook. This came literally out of nowhere during an interview with Fight Hub TV.
“Devin Haney is a waste of time. I want Gervonta Davis….. I go for big fish, I don’t go after fucking e-mail champ, he a bum with no chin.”
Okay, before we move on, it is worth pointing out that Rolly had been chasing Haney long after this so-called “e-mail champion” nonsense began. Furthermore, he continued to call for a fight with the WBC champion despite not being in the WBC rankings.
Romero is ranked number one by the WBA, and with Davis being the regular champion, a mandatory defense can be ordered. Moreover, Tank has had two high-profile pay-per-views, so this is simply a money move by the WBA interim belt holder.
Rolly would take to social media with a post calling for a fight with Davis by the end of the year. Moreover, he responded to fans immediately asking if he was serious about the fight or just clout chasing, as the case with Haney.
“I’m Tank’s Mandatory.”
This is when the back and forth between both rival fighters got so disrespectful that this author is giving a Parental Guidance warning.
