Jesse Rodriguez Coming to Snatch a Belt from Antonio Vargas?
Unified junior bantamweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez is officially making the move up to the bantamweight division. Early reports indicate that his debut at 118 pounds could come against reigning WBA bantamweight champion Antonio Vargas. This would set up a compelling clash between two world-class fighters.
Ranked third in the 3Kings Boxing Top Ten Fighter Rankings, Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) has established himself as one of boxing’s elite talents. The 26-year-old southpaw is coming off a dominant tenth-round knockout victory over Fernando Martinez in November 2025. It was here he unified titles in the junior bantamweight division.
WHY HE’S LEAVING 115?
With that win, the discussion around Rodriguez was never about if he would move up in weight, but when. According to boxing journalist Julius Julianis, the likely opponent for Rodriguez’s bantamweight debut will be Vargas.
Rodriguez’s move to bantamweight is largely strategic. His team initially hoped his next bout would be for undisputed status at junior bantamweight. However, those plans stalled when IBF champion Willibaldo Garcia was scheduled against mandatory challenger Andrew Moloney next month in Kyrgyzstan.
The undisputed opportunity temporarily fades from reach. So, the Rodriguez camp has decided the best response was to pursue a championship in a new division.
PART OF A GREATER PLAN
The long-term goal for Bam is a move to 122 pounds, where he hopes to face the winner of the May 2 showdown between undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue and three-division champion Junto Nakatani. A future bout against either fighter would be one of the biggest matchups in the lower weight classes and could significantly shape the pound-for-pound landscape in boxing.
For now, all eyes are on Rodriguez’s anticipated bantamweight debut and the possibility of a title fight with Vargas—a matchup that could kickstart the next chapter of Bam Rodriguez’s pursuit of greatness.
