Callum Johnson Tests Positive for COVID-19; Out Of Joe Smith Jr Fight!
Light heavyweight contender Callum “The One” Johnson (20-1, 14KOs), who was set to challenge WBO light heavyweight champion Joe “The Common Man” Smith Jr (27-3, 21KOs) on January 15, has tested positive for COVID-19 and had to withdraw. This is very unfortunate for Johnson who was looking to become a world champion in his second attempt.
He was set to fly out to New York this week along with his trainer. However, those plans are now temporarily postponed. Smith’s promoter, Top Rank, is currently seeking a new opponent for the WBO champion.
It is currently unknown on whether or not the bout with Johnson will be rescheduled when he’s cleared to resume training. Moreover, number one ranked WBO light heavyweight contender and former world title challenger Anthony Yarde (22-2, 21KOs) could be Smith’s next opponent. That’s assuming Smith wins against whoever his new opponent is.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates once a new opponent for Smith is found.
