George Kambosos Doubts Teofimo Lopez Wants a Rematch

When he was last in the ring, WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13 KO’s) snagged a much needed win. He was fresh off a win over Sandor Martin that most thought he should have lost. This is why Lopez’s recent win over Josh Taylor injected a much needed jolt of electricity back into this name value. Despite the quality victory, one-time Lopez conqueror George Kambosos (20-2, 10 KO’s) feels that he still has his number, as he shared with Fight Hub TV.

“I saw it, he didn’t sound too confident, did he?! He was like, ‘uhhhh, Kambosos fight?’ I don’t know, he just didn’t sound confident. That’s one thing about Teofimo Lopez – that confidence. When it comes to me and him, I just know how to handle that with me and him. So we shall see. If it makes sense and he’s there, he’s not retired and he hasn’t vacated the belt and it’s there on the table, I am all for it! I’ll fight the best of the best, I already fought him, so let’s do it again.”

ONE FIGHT AT A TIME

Kambosos is set to make his American ring return this July 22 versus Maxi Hughes. It will be his first in-ring assignment since losing a pair of back-to-back duels with the undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney. Even with those defeats however, Kambosos has retained the favorable rankings of #6 (WBC), #8 (IBF), #11 (WBA) and #14 (WBO).

Therefore, a win against Hughes would maintain his strategic position in the division. Naturally though, a third consecutive loss would have to have acidic results on his standings, and any shot at securing a Lopez rematch. So, first let’s see if Kambosos handles business on July 22.
