Are We On The Verge Of The Return Of Knockout CP Freshmart?

Followers of the lower-weight divisions are hoping for more activity at 105 pounds in the new year. Things are looking promising so far. According to Asian Boxing, negotiations are underway for the return of WBA ‘Super’ World Strawweight champion Knockout CP Freshmart’s (21-0, 7 KOs).

While a specific date and location have not been finalized, his promoters are looking to have him fight sometime in May. Pulling this event together will not be easy. There are travel restrictions in CP Freshmart’s home country of Thailand due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Hope springs eternal for the division. In 2020, there were only three world title fights at 105-pounds. The bulk of the year involved the drama surrounding Freshmart’s countryman and former WBC Strawweight World champion Wanheng Menayothin (54-1, 18 KOs). In June 2020, he suddenly announced his retirement. The following day, there was an about-face and he decided to fight on. In November of that year, he lost the WBC title to countryman Panya Pradabsri (35-1, 22).

As far as Freshmart is concerned, this would be his first time in the ring since defeating Norihito Tanaka (20-8, 10 KOs) in March of 2020. A world champ since June of 2016, the 30-year-old from Surin, Thailand has successfully defended the title WBA ‘Super’ World Strawweight title eight times.
