Lomachenko Retires to Favorable Attention Over Tanaka

Boxing media showed clear bias when handling the retirement of multi-division champions Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko and Kosei Tanaka. There has always been a side of the sport that plays favorites when it comes to certain fighters.

When looking at their resumes, a case can be made that Tanaka had the better career. Yet, fans and pundits will argue that it was easy for him, considering there is only a three-pound difference per division. In addition, most boxing fans in the United States don’t pay attention to the lower division.

Over the years, the sport of boxing has tried to pretend like Lomachenko never lost to Orlando Salido in 2014. One time, while on ESPN, the network falsely showed the Ukrainian with an undefeated record. His loss to multi-division champion Devin Haney is still considered a robbery by several fans inside the boxing community.

The same thing was done for Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, who was also hit with high praise before proving he was worthy of it. Yet, the media made it seem as if guys like Daniel Geale, Martin Murray, and David Lemieux were top-level fighters. In addition, some pundits believe he should have lost to Daniel Jacobs.

Boxing will always have a biased nature to it because of fighters’ affiliation with promotional companies and networks.
