Former heavyweight title contender Luis “King Kong” Ortiz (31-2, 26ko) is looking to get back into the title hunt by stepping back in the ring against the relatively unknown Alexander “The Great” Flores (18-2-1, 16ko).

The Cuban heavyweight hasn’t been in the ring since losing to former WBC champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder in November 2019. He will use this fight to kickstart a comeback run in hopes of staying relevant enough to get another title opportunity.

Flores has a tall order in which a victory would grant a huge reward. However, he has lost in two step-up fights against former champions Charles Martin and Joseph Parker.

If you blinked, went to get a drink, or ran to the bathroom, then you were upset when you slowly walked back to the television!

King Kong immediately came out looking to make a statement that he was the more superior of the two men. Stalking the overmatched Flores, he found the range with the jab before landing a good straight left-hand with another left to the body for good measure.

Flores would retreat out of the corner getting back to the center of the ring, only to fight from a defeated posture. He kept backing up from the advancing Ortiz only to get trapped against the ropes and was sent to the canvas from a perfect liver punch that took the air out of him.

The overmatched opponent couldn’t recover from this and was counted out! The expression on his face while grimacing from the pain even after the fight was over told the story as to how debilitating a shot to the liver can be.

Ortiz may have made a case as to why you can’t disregard him as a serious player in the heavyweight division. However, more needs to be done to justify another title run.

The heavyweight division is changing and the 41-year-old former two-time title contender’s window is closing. Whether or not that third opportunity presents itself, his career and dreams of becoming a champion are still alive.
