Is Jerwin Ancajas Primed for Redemption in Fernando Martinez Rematch?

On February 26, newly crowned IBF super flyweight champion Fernando “Pumita” Martinez (14-0, 8KO) dethroned long-reigning champion Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas (33-2-2, 22KO). It sent shockwaves through the division as Pumita came out of nowhere and fought beautifully en route to winning the title. Pretty Boy has an opportunity to regain the title and climb back atop the mountain in the upcoming rematch. Martinez comes to the ring as the champion, riding a wave of confidence.

In their first encounter, Ancajas tried using the jab to create distance before switching his strategy to fighting up close and digging to the body. This proved to be the wrong method of attack. His lack of head movement made him an easy target for Martinez’s left hook.

ANCAJAS NEEDS TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS EARLY

The former champion needs to adjust the game plan to win the rematch. He should keep the fight at midrange and avoid getting into a shootout. Movement is the key here. In the last bout, he fought as if cement was in his shoes. Furthermore, he needs to attack off the front foot and throw more combination punches and counters to control the action. Ancajas, for the love of god, must get off the centerline and provide angles to avoid taking too many shots to the head.

MARTINEZ NEEDS TO KEEP THE SAME ENERGY

Pumita did an excellent job of controlling the first fight from the moment the bell sounded. He immediately went to work landing those short, compact left hooks to the body and head-snapping uppercuts at close range.

The champion needs to keep up the same energy as before, going into the rematch. Martinez should change up the level of attack and go to the body early. In addition, Pumita needs to develop the jab, which opens up more opportunities and gives the former champion a reason to pause.

PREDICTION

The reality is Pretty Boy has not looked like the same fighter that lifted the belt off of McJoe Arroyo back in 2016. With that being said Martinez’s pressure, work-rate, and aggression will lead to another victory.

Fans can catch the action live on Showtime from the Dignity Health Sports Park in California on October 8.
