Masamichi Yabuki Believes Knockout Win Possible Over Calixto

June 6 marks the return of reigning IBF flyweight champion Masamichi Yabuki, who will defend his title against Mexico’s Rene Calixto in Aichi, Japan. The champion enters the bout with two objectives in mind: score a knockout victory and position himself for a future unification fight.

MAKING HIS INTENTIONS CLEAR

Calixto is far from an easy assignment. The Mexican challenger previously fought to a draw and later dropped a split decision to current IBF junior bantamweight champion Willibaldo Garcia, proving he can compete at a high level. During pre-fight interviews with the Japanese boxing media, Yabuki (19-4, 18 KOs) acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge and praised Calixto’s (24-1-1, 11 KOs) aggressive style. Despite that respect, the champion remains confident the fight will not reach the final bell.

(translated from Japanese) “I will do my best to end it with a KO.”

Yabuki has been a prominent figure in the lower-weight divisions since September 2021, when he captured the WBC junior flyweight title with an eleventh-round stoppage of Kenshiro Teraji. Since then, he has added a second world title and established himself as one of Japan’s most dangerous punchers. Yet, one achievement continues to elude him: becoming a unified world champion.

A potential path to that goal could lead to WBO flyweight champion Anthony Olascuaga. The American titleholder has competed in Japan several times and has developed a strong fanbase there. Given the popularity of both fighters in the Japanese market, a unification clash later this year or in early 2027 would be a logical and attractive option.

At 33 years old, Yabuki understands that opportunities to enhance his legacy are becoming increasingly valuable. A successful unification campaign would strengthen his standing among the top flyweights of his era.

Before any of those possibilities can become reality, Yabuki must first take care of business against Calixto. If the champion has his way, he will do so in emphatic fashion with another knockout victory.
