Mikaela Mayer Continues To Push For Undisputed; Wants Baumgardner Now!
Unified junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5KOs) continues to state that becoming undisputed is the main goal. Furthermore, she believes that needs to happen now, and the fight with WBC champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (12-1, 7KOs) doesn’t need a year of build-up.
It is not a secret that Mayer and the rival WBC champion have serious bad blood. Baumgardner has been hunting for a fight with the unified champion. In 2021, she snatched the WBC title away from former champion Terri Harper.
Mayer has been stating that if a fight for undisputed doesn’t happen in 2022, she will move up and challenge the winner between undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.
Baumgardner has stated that the unified champion needs to wait her turn, and if she can’t make the weight anymore, to move up. Furthermore, she indicated that a fight with WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi is next before fighting Mayer.
LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN NOW
During an interview on the DAZN boxing show, Mayer made it clear she has no problem with fighting Baumgardner for undisputed and that they don’t need a long build-up.
“We don’t need two years of a build-up. We don’t need that, and she keeps saying, ‘oh we need to build this fight’ […] we don’t need a year build-up. That’s what the three or four months leading into the fight are for.”
When its suggested that the bigger names should fight for undisputed, Mayer made it clear that it’s not a problem. However, she pointed out how trying to build a fight collapsed a showdown with former WBC champion Harper.
“It just needs to happen this year […] let’s not make the fans wait, because guess what happened? They tried to do that with Terri harper. Everybody wanted to see me go against Terri Harper.”
“The fight never happened, the fans never got to see what they wanted to see, and I don’t want that to happen. So we can go for undisputed, but it needs to happen this year.”
Mayer took to social media pushing her point even more by revealing what she was told by former undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus.
