Vito Mielnicki Decisions Huerta and Eyes Top Contenders at 160
Middleweight contender Vito “White Magic” Mielnicki Jr. (23-1, 13KO) defeated Omar Huerta (15-1-1, 13KO) with ease. A fight with former champion Tim Tszyu, Yoenli Hernandez, or Interim titlist Denzel Bentley could be next.
White Magic was able to do whatever he wanted throughout the fight. He did a good job of countering, using the jab, and controlling the tempo of the fight. Under trainer Ronnie Shields’ teaching, Mielnicki showed improvement in defense, as well. In the end, the undefeated fighter won by unanimous decision by a virtual blowout.
Depending on how things play out, he could be fighting for a world title. Despite being ranked #9 by the WBC and IBF, Mielnicki is rated #5 by the WBO. However, he will see a significant bump in rankings, considering the top spot is empty, and #2-ranked Envy Saavedra was recently defeated.
When surveying the landscape of the division, he is in a prime position for a high-profile fight. He could face Hernandez, who is ranked #3 by the WBO. However, a Tszyu bout would bring more recognition and financial gain. But, he may get a chance to face Bentley in a possible title fight if the WBO decides to strip Janibek Alimkhanuly of the title.
While boxing fans wait to see what Team Mielnicki does next, the middleweight division is open, and he is right in the middle of all the action.
