Jaime Munguia v Daniel Jacobs Tracking for June 11!

Fighters going in total opposite directions in their careers are currently in talks for a summer showdown. Former WBO 154-pound champion Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31KOs) and former WBA Regular and IBF 160-pound champion Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs (37-4, 30KOs) are reportedly closing in on an agreement to fight. The target date for the fight is June 11 and would be contested at a catchweight of 164 pounds.

MAKES SENSE FOR JACOBS

At 35 years of age, it’s clear that Jacobs is on the backend of his career. Further evidence is his split decision loss to super middleweight contender John Ryder back on February 12. The former champion went into that fight as the favorite. While Ryder is a solid fighter, Jacobs, at his best, would’ve most likely won that fight by a comfortable margin.

However, with this fight against Munguia, he has a chance to redeem himself. The young Mexican former world champion is known for his pressure and power punching. Furthermore, he is the fresher fighter of the two and is unbeaten. A win for Jacobs would pump life into a career that is slowly dying with each poor performance.

MAKES NO SENSE FOR MUNGUIA

Now, let’s talk about Munguia. This fight for him is very winnable. However, if we’re being honest, it’s not needed for him. He had two opportunities to fight for a world title. The first opportunity would’ve been for the vacant WBO interim title as the number one ranked contender for the 160-pound title against number two ranked contender Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (11-0, 8KOs) after it was ordered by the WBO.

After he verbally agreed to a deal to face unbeaten WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22KOs), that went out the window after Oscar De La Hoya insisted that DAZN be part of the Showtime telecast. So with that, he turned to Jacobs.

While this fight with Jacobs isn’t horrible, it’s not a fight that people want to see Munguia in. As a former world champion, his caliber of competition should be significantly better than it currently is. Don’t let this Jacobs fight fool you. If he comes into this bout against Munguia like he did against Ryder, he could wind up on the wrong side of a knockout.
