Nick Ball’s Pursuit of Inoue Raises More Questions Than Answers

Reigning WBA featherweight champion Nick “The Wrecking Ball” Ball has been outspoken in his pursuit of undisputed pound-for-pound king Naoya “Monster” Inoue. But judging by his latest performance, Ball may want to think carefully before stepping in with boxing’s most complete fighter.

In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ball (23-0-1, 13 KOs) retained his belt with a unanimous decision over Sam Goodman (20-1, 8 KOs), earning scorecards of 117-111, 118-110, and 115-113. On paper, the verdict looked convincing. In reality, Goodman’s steady jab and measured discipline troubled the champion through much of the fight. Ball often struggled to close distance or establish rhythm, and it wasn’t until the late rounds that his pressure and physicality finally turned the tide.

Despite the rocky showing, the Liverpool native remains steadfast in calling for Inoue. Ball and his team have spent much of 2026 campaigning for the clash, especially with “The Monster” expected to move up to featherweight next year. The British fighter insists his strength and rugged style would be enough to wear the Japanese star down.

Yet Goodman, who lacks Inoue’s speed, precision, and explosive power, still managed to give Ball consistent problems. That raises a troubling question: if Ball labored against Goodman, how would he cope with the dynamic arsenal of one of boxing’s most dominant champions?

For now, Ball keeps pushing for his dream matchup. Whether it proves to be ambition, or a mistake, remains to be seen.
