Osleys Iglesias Stops Pavel Silyagin; Promises More Title Victories
Newly crowned IBF super middleweight champion Osleys “El Tornado” Iglesias made a powerful statement with a dominant eighth-round stoppage victory over Pavel Silyagin, announcing himself as a serious force at 168 pounds at the Montreal Casino in Canada.
From the opening bell, Iglesias (15-0, 14 KOs) controlled the action with precision and intent. Utilizing a sharp, educated jab, the Cuban standout dictated the pace and kept Silyagin (16-1-1, 7 KOs) consistently off balance. His punch selection was calculated and punishing as he mixed levels effectively while landing clean, damaging shots.
Iglesias rocked Silyagin in round one, setting the tone for what would become a one-sided contest. As the rounds progressed, the offense of El Tornado only intensified. A brutal uppercut proved to be a turning point. The blow caused severe swelling to Silyagin’s left eye, further limiting the Russian’s ability to respond. After enduring seven rounds of sustained punishment, Silyagin’s corner made the wise decision to stop the fight at the end of the round.
THE FIRST OF MANY TO COME?
An emotional Iglesias celebrated the victory by dedicating it to his mother, marking the realization of a lifelong dream. Despite the exultation of victory, Iglesias made it clear his intentions during the post-fight interview:
“This doesn’t end here. I have two belts, a few more are missing.”
With the IBF title now in his possession, Iglesias finds himself in a prime position in a stacked super middleweight division filled with potential blockbuster matchups. However, a clash with stablemate and WBC champion Christian Mbilli appears unlikely in the immediate future. Mbilli is widely considered the frontrunner to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a high-profile September showdown.
Instead, a more realistic and compelling path forward for Iglesias could be a unification bout against the winner of the upcoming clash between Jose Resendiz and Jaime Munguia. They are set to compete for the vacant WBO title on May 2.
A victory in that matchup would further cement his status as one of the division’s rising stars, and potentially its future king.
