Caleb Plant Talks Angulo

In July 2019, IBF world super middleweight Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant (19-0, 11 KO’s) made his first successful title defense over Mike “White Bear” Lee (21-1, 11 KO’s). Once in the ring, Plant provided an obscenely one-sided performance and stopped Lee in the third. Ever since that fight, the laid-back country boy from Tennessee has ached to contract his next fight.

THE ANGULO ANGLE

Starting in November, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo (26-7, 21 KO’s) has consistently been mentioned as a candidate opponent. Along those lines, Sweets Hands has confirmed that Angulo is definitely an option, however he is only one of many. Once in possession of a finalized contract, Plant insists he’ll be swift to share the news. Until that time, just like Plant, we will all have to play the waiting game.

On the one hand, the IBF champion is understandably anxious. The recently crowned champion, in the prime of his career, wants to prove his worth in front of the world. On the other hand, Plant realizes that boxing is a business. Consequently, there are just some unsavory protocols that come with the territory.

Though a world champion, Plant is mindful of the fact that he is only 19 bouts into his professional career. Yes, he is an extreme talent with seemingly limitless potential. Still, he has not reached the level of cash cow and media darling. Without having secured either of these coveted positions in the sport, Plant realizes that he is in no position to demand his next fight, as he told to Fight Hub TV.

“To be honest I wouldn’t be able to tell you; not because I don’t want to. I wouldn’t be to tell you who the front runner is, but he is definitely a name in the hat, somebody that we’ve been looking at. But there are some other guys too. So nothing is set in stone, and when it does get set in stone, I’ll be just as eager to let you guys know…”

“I’m not a match maker, I only have 19 fights. I’m not in a position where I’m able to dictate who I’m able to fight as opposed to someone maybe like Canelo or a Floyd or somebody like that. I think a lot of people forget I only have 19 fights, so I’m not really in the position, yet, where I’m able to say ‘this is exactly who I’m fighting and this is where I’m fighting’. You know what I’m saying? But if we do fight, he’s getting hurt.”
