Jeremias Ponce Focused on Winning IBF Title Over Subriel Matias

Argentina’s Jeremias “Jere” Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) will vie for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title on February 25 against Subriel Matias (18-1, 18 KOs). During an exclusive interview on The PBC Boxing podcast, Ponce talked about how he’s ready for this moment.

LOOK FOR AN ENTERTAINING FIGHT

Matias is an aggressive fighter who looks to land big shots. The Argentinian also prefers to press the action. In breaking down the upcoming fight against Matias, Ponce said to expect fireworks once the bell rings.

“I think it’s going to be a very, very good fight. The fans are going to enjoy it because both Matias and I want to gain supremacy in the middle of the ring.

We are two bulls that are going after each other and just locking horns out there, and that’s going to be a little bit different than comparing that to someone that maybe is a little more dodgy, or tries to counter more. I think that both Matias and I are going to be providing a great show for the fans.”

Ponce’s breakthrough performance came in June 2021, when he stopped Lewis Ritson in ten in an IBF title eliminator. With the win, Ponce became the IBF’s mandatory challenger. The matchup against Ponce was ordered after the then-undisputed champion, Josh Taylor, vacated the IBF strap in August 2022.

JUST WIN, BABY

It’s been a long wait for Ponce to get his title shot. After all the sacrifices in and out of the ring, Jere is hungry to leave the ring with the red IBF belt strapped around his waist.

“All I care about is winning, no matter what. I’m bringing the belt back to Argentina. If you ask me how I prefer winning, of course, it’s going to be by knockout because I don’t like leaving things in the hands of the judges. But in the end, if it ends with my hands being raised, I’ll take one round or twelve.”
