Billy Joe Saunders Wants His Chance To Fight “Ginger Bollocks”
WBO Super Middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) is one of boxing’s biggest lightning rods. Known as much for his volatile mouth outside the ring as much for his ability inside the ropes, the undefeated two-time, two-division world champion is liable to say and do anything. Consequences are damned.
Despite the controversy that seems to forever revolve around him, the 30-year-old Brit has been adamant about a desire to fight one Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs). Said fight has been talked about throughout 2020.
As the sport is making plans to come back from the COVID-19 pandemic, Saunders took to Instagram Live to talk about his plans. Claiming that he will finish his career undefeated, the man who calls himself “Superb” made it emphatically clear that he has one fighter in his sights: Canelo.
ALL HE WANTS IS HIS SHOT
“You got some good, good fighters out there. But I know, the next thing I want to do is beat the invincible man, Canelo Alvarez. He’s the big one they’re going on about.
I’m lucky enough to have MTK Global. They’re doing everything to make sure this fight goes ahead and happens. But that’s the one I want because to be the best, you have to beat the best.”
Saunders feels his style, skills, and pedigree would be the difference. Noting fighters like current IBF World Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and former world Middleweight champion belt holder Danny Jacobs have had their shots at Alvarez, let him have his shot.
“All your other big superstars, your Danny Jacobs and all the other big fighters at the weight, they’ve had their chance, and they’ve been beaten.
Let me have a chance. If I get beat, I get beat. I’m the fairest man in the world. If I get beat by someone better than me, all I can do is shake their hand. My main goal is to get ginger bollocks (Canelo) in the ring and see what I can do.”
MITIGATING ISSUES
Now there are some mitigating issues that Saunders still has to face outside of the ring. He is currently suspended by the British Boxing Board of Commissions (BBBoC) following a controversial March 2020 social media post. In the video post, Saunders seemed to imply that putting your hands on a woman is the proper way to deal with a lady who may nag them during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
After publicly apologizing, the BBBoC sent paperwork to Saunders and his team requesting a hearing to discuss the issue. As of this time, Saunders has yet to return files to set a hearing according to England’s Daily Mail. All that aside, if Saunders and his team resolve those, all eyes are on boxing’s golden egg – Canelo Alvarez.
