Lopez Prefers Ryan Garcia to Shakur Stevenson

Teofimo Lopez Seemingly Hesitant to Rumble With Stevenson

Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) loves the spotlight. The WBO junior welterweight champion has built his brand on bold declarations, high-profile callouts, and the image of a fearless warrior ready to take on anyone from lightweight to welterweight. But when the conversation turns to WBC lightweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs), Lopez’s swagger takes a noticeable step back — and fans are starting to notice.

Lopez recently polled his followers on social media, asking if they’d rather see him fight Stevenson or IBF champion Richardson Hitchins. After Stevenson publicly called him out, Lopez sidestepped and named Ryan Garcia as his preferred opponent. That’s not a great look, especially considering Garcia’s stock plummeted after his lethargic loss to Rolando “Rolly” Romero on May 2.

HE DOESN’T SEEM TO WANT THAT SMOKE

This is the fight Lopez should be chasing. Stevenson is coming off an impressive win over William Zepeda on July 12. The New Jersey Native’s popularity is surging, and stylistically, it’s an irresistible clash.

Lopez’s explosive offense against Stevenson’s airtight defense and ring generalship – it’s a matchup that could define legacies. Choosing Garcia instead feels like taking the easy road, and the boxing public can smell it.

For a fighter who prides himself on “taking over” divisions and chasing greatness, Lopez’s reluctance here undercuts the very image he’s tried to craft. Stevenson is the kind of opponent who tests not only skills but character.

Right now, The Takeover’s unwillingness to commit is sending the message that he’s not ready for that test. In boxing, perception matters. Unless he steps up, this one could stick.
