Shakur Stevenson vs Joe Cordina Set for October 12

Well it seems that WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KO’s) will make a quick turn around as he is now slated to face one-time super featherweight champion Joe Cordina (17-1, 9 KO’s) this October 12. The two will appear on the undercard of the upcoming clash of light heavyweight champions Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

Stevenson would have preferred to have tested his might against someone like WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis or IBF lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko. Unfortunately for him however, those fighters were unwilling to make themselves available for the duel. So instead, Stevenson is now content to go head-to-head with Cordina in what he is openly calling a money fight.

REDEMPTION OR REDUCTION?

In his last prizefight, the WBC champion defeated Artem Harutyunyan in a battle that has been widely criticized. The backlash stems from what many are calling a lackluster showing. According to Stevenson however, he thoroughly outclassed Harutyunyan and only those who don’t understand boxing are taking issue with this performance.

For his part, Cordina, ranked #13 (WBC), is coming off of an eighth-round upset TKO loss at the hands of Anthony Cacace. While he has competed in the lightweight division before, this will be the first time that he has done so in the last several years. Due to the recent difficulty that Cordina is rebounding from, there is no doubt that Stevenson will be viewed as the heavy favorite heading into this clash.

Theoretically, the Philly native has the opportunity to stage a more exciting fight and polish up his name value a bit. At the same time, there is a high likelihood that no matter how good he potentially looks, Stevenson will still receive a good measure of flack for the opponent. Especially if he does not outshine what Cacace accomplished. Yet, in the end, we will just have to see how this plays out in the ring come fight night.
