Shakur Stevenson Targets Conor Benn Just to Silence his Doubters

When last in action, WBO super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KO’s) defeated two-division champion Teofimo Lopez by a wide unanimous decision. Now, Stevenson has his eyes locked on welterweight fighter Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (25-1, 14 KO’s). Benn himself is coming off a somewhat lackluster victory over Regis Prograis this past April 11. Some may think it’s odd that the smaller man is targeting the larger one. Yet, as Stevenson explained on The Ariel Helwani Show, the size difference is largely his biggest motivator.

“I’m only interested because when I said, ‘let’s do it,’ every fan said, ‘oh he’s too small, he’s going to get murdered, he’s going to get beat up.’ So, since y’all felt that way, then let’s make the fight happen. Let me show y’all why I will beat the holy shit out of Conor Benn.”

When asked about how the match would play out, Stevenson remained as bold and confident.

“I think there is the real possibility I stop him. I would be disappointed in myself if I don’t stop him…I’m hearing that he is fighting in September. So, if he is fighting in September, I’m available to fight in September, also.”

PICK ON SOMEONE YOUR SIZE

While this may be a fun fight to daydream about, in all reality it’s not very likely to happen…at least not next. Benn has already garnered a fair amount of flack for taking on the much smaller Regis Prograis and not being able to stop or notably hurt him. For this reason, it would not be probable that Team Benn would choose to duel with another smaller man being brought up in weight.

Outside of this, The Destroyer appears to be in negotiations with WBC welterweight champion “King Ry” Ryan Garcia. This would be the far more logical prizefight and much more palatable to the viewing audience at home. So now we just have to see if the two teams can hammer out a contract.
