Sunny Edwards Locked In for Showdown with Bam Rodriguez
On December 16, IBF flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (20-0, 4 KO’s) will stage the fifth defense of his title that he originally captured from Moruti Mthalane back on April 30, 2021. In the latest defense, he will face formidable WBO 112-pound champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KO’s) in an intriguing unification bout. This is a match that Edwards has been searching for and is eager to engage. Not only will he have the opportunity to secure another belt, he will face an opponent that has him dialed all the way in.
“[I’m the most focused] Ever, ever! I’ve done everything well within myself, I’m talking takeaways in camp, I’m talking no supplements, I’m talking do whatever I want, really.”
MUST BE GREAT TO BE GREAT
Edwards has acquired his laser focus due to the significant hurdle that the brick-fisted Rodriguez presents. Yet this should come as no great surprise as Showtime has made a habit of chasing dangerous foes as he did when he pursued WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez. Denied that opposition, Edwards is ecstatic that he has been supplied with this new opportunity.
“Just give me a competitive fight that I can train for and actually feel like there is some threat getting in the ring, Bam gives me that! Fantastic! [Andres] Campos didn’t really, I knew I could beat him, so I trained like I knew I could beat him. Bam I know I can beat, but I will need to be a great version of myself to beat because he is a great fighter. He’s shown that, he’s proven that and everyone believes him to be so. So I will put him on a pedestal, even past what everyone is putting him, a pedestal above that because that will bring the best out of me!”
Without question, Edwards versus Rodriguez is an outstanding showdown that will no doubt push the victor into uncomfortable territory. Luckily though, regardless of who comes out on top, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news and all the meaningful implications!
