It’s Time for Errol Spence To Officially Hang Up The Gloves
When it seems like a boxer has lost his fighting spirit, that’s the clearest sign it may be time to call it quits. That’s exactly where Errol “The Truth” Spence appears to be. Once viewed as one of the most dominant forces in the welterweight division, Spence’s aura of invincibility has eroded. The confidence, hunger, and warrior’s spirit that once defined him no longer seem to be present.
A former unified champion at 147 pounds, he hasn’t fought since suffering a ninth-round stoppage defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2023. He has often hinted at a return to the ring. The Texas native signed to face reigning unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in 2024. Unfortunately, a series of postponements ultimately forced that bout to be canceled.
The Truth’s journey has been remarkable, but it has also taken a heavy toll. His well-documented car accident in 2019 was a brush with death that most assumed would end his career. To his credit, he came back and not only continued fighting, but managed to defend his titles at the highest level.
THE WILL TO FIGHT IS NO LONGER THERE
It’s clear that injuries and the beating by Crawford have all done lasting physical and mental damage. Over the last year, Spence has spent more time on social media posting about living the life of a family man on his farm in Texas than you’ve seen video of him in the boxing ring.
Spence has already achieved more than enough to earn respect: a unified champion, one of the era’s top welterweights, and a man who overcame adversity outside the ring. There’s no shame in walking away. In fact, doing so now would protect both, his legacy and his future well-being.
He will always be remembered as “The Truth,” but the truth now is that his best days are behind him. It’s time for him to step away before the sport takes more from him than it already has.
