Wilder vs Chisora is a Bout of Fading Fighters at Best

Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will face Derek Chisora in April. While both men remain recognizable names, this is a fight the sport of boxing could easily do without.

NOT WHAT THEY ONCE WERE

The uncomfortable reality is that both fighters are well past their primes. Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs), once arguably the most explosive and dangerous puncher in the division, has not been the same since his seventh-round stoppage loss to Tyson Fury in February 2020. That defeat didn’t just mark a loss on his record; it exposed physical and technical vulnerabilities that have only become more pronounced with time.

Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs), meanwhile, enters on a three-fight winning streak, but that surface-level success doesn’t tell the full story. At 43 years old, he is a fighter operating on borrowed time, grinding through fights with diminishing returns. The wear and tear are evident, and the physical decline is impossible to ignore.

Despite this, the bout appears destined to happen largely because a Wilder victory would theoretically position him for a high-profile showdown with unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk later this year. But realistically, who would give Wilder more than a puncher’s chance against Usyk at this stage of his career?

Now 40, Wilder no longer fights behind sturdy legs, and his chin has become increasingly suspect. Chisora, for his part, no longer applies pressure with the same ferocity or durability that once made him a difficult night for anyone in the division.

Ultimately, this matchup feels less like a meaningful heavyweight contest and more like a nostalgic cash-in — a fight built on name recognition rather than competitive relevance. For a division that desperately needs fresh, compelling matchups, Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora represents a step sideways at best, and a step backward at worst.
