Xander Zayas Dissects Slawa Spomer To Guard Title Hopes
At The Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City, highly-ranked junior middleweight Xander Zayas pretty much had his way en route to a ninth-round stoppage over rugged Slawa Spomer.
After seizing control during the first three rounds, Zayas (21-0, 19 KOs) suffered a brief scare as he was buzzed by a counter-right from Slawa (20-1, 11 KOs) in the closing seconds of round four. From there, Zayas settled down and began to dominate.
He repeatedly tagged Slawa with left jabs and combinations. Body shots were the key for Zayas as Slawa began to show signs of wear and tear at the end of round eight. Midway through round nine, a Zayas left hook to the body hurt Slawa. Sensing his foe was in trouble, Zayas poured on the punches until the referee waved the fight over with a minute to go in the round.
Currently ranked number one by the WBO at 154, Zayas would love a fight with the reigning unified junior middleweight champion, Sebastian Fundora, by the end of this year.
