Chantelle Cameron Hopeful the Katie Taylor Fight Is Finalized Soon
Negotiations continue to intensify for the proposed fight between undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) and reigning undisputed junior welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs). Cameron believes that there’s no reason the match can’t get made.
Taylor was to have a rematch with undisputed 126-pound champion Amanda Serrano on May 20 in Ireland. However, when Serrano withdrew due to injury, Cameron offered to step in. Taylor accepted the challenge and then went on social media to express her desire for a fight with Cameron.
During an interview with the media source iD Boxing, Cameron revealed that there were discussions about a fight against Taylor in September 2023. But when she heard the news about Serrano, Cameron thought, why wait to face Taylor when she can fight her on that same May 20 date?
DO YOUR JOB
Cameron says she is willing to do whatever is necessary for negotiations to cross the finish line. It’s not about just money. Facing Taylor is also about legacy. The undisputed junior welterweight champion is hopeful she gets a chance at what she calls her dream fight.
“I just hope Matchroom, Eddie Hearn, and DAZN give us this chance because Katie wants it. I want it. It’s down to them. This is nothing to do with us.
We’re the fighters. We’re the ones that’s going to prepare, that are going to punch each other in the head and beat each other up . . . We’re both under the same promotion, and it’s an easy fight to make. This fight can be signed, sealed, and delivered in twenty-four hours . . . It’s the easiest fight they can make, and it’s a fight that everybody’s interested in.”
To Cameron’s point, the potential matchup has drawn plenty of interest from boxing observers. A battle of two undisputed champions, it’s one of the best matchups in the sport.
LAYING DOWN THE GAUNTLET
The undisputed 140-pound champion understands she has to be at her best to win. Hungry for the biggest fight of her career in a battle of undisputed champions, Cameron wants this fight bad and has this final message to Team Taylor.
“Twenty-four hours, I’m ready to sign. Literally, there’s no excuses. I want the fight. Katie wants the fight. Let’s make it happen.”
